Brief Bio

Michael Bien specializes in the areas of information technology, remote data capture, and project management.

Mr. Bien is a 1986 graduate of Temple University with a BA in Computer and Informational Science. He has also earned an MS in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University.

He began his professional career in the defense industry. At Analytics, he worked in the Human Factors Engineering Group where he provided computer science expertise to cross functional research teams, conducting experiments and developing applications to analyze eye and brain data.

Mr. Bien first joined the pharmaceutical industry in 1989 with SmithKline where he was a member of the Clinical Systems Development focused on re-engineering clinical systems. After the merger of SmithKline and Beecham, his focus shifted to aligning disparate systems in support of the new company.

Mr. Bien joined Astra Merck in April 1994 as a member of the Information Technology team in support of Drug Development as a team leader of a project that included the planning, analysis, design, and implementation of the processes, organization, and technology required to make the company operational in remote data capture.

In June 1997, Mike co-founded a company called Synthos Corporation. The company provides SYNTHOSSM Advanced Data Solutions to the pharmaceutical industry focusing on the capture, cleaning, and migration/integration of clinical data.

In July 1999, Mike joined Phase Forward as Director of Sales Support. In this position, he provided process and technical support to the business development team focused on the selling of InformTM, the internet-based clinical trials solution.

He founded Bien Consulting in September 2000 providing services of Strategic Consulting focused in Remote Data Capture Implementation, Infrastructure Project Development, Remote Project Management, Sales Training, and Specialized Marketing.

Mike is an associate professor at LaSalle University in the Math and Computer Science department where he teaches graduate level software engineering and project management.
